06 Dec McCOMB WELCOMES BIG STEP UP IN SZABO
Sean McComb believes facing the powerful Zoltan Szabo will bring the best out of him when the pair collide in Belfast on Friday.
The Turf Lodge starlet is attracting significant praise having eased to 4-0-KO3 as a professional and now steps up to a six-rounder against Hungary’s Szabo (25-13-KO11), who boasts a stoppage win over former European champion Stephen Ormond.
Far from being intimidated by the jump in class, McComb is adamant he’ll prove himself all the more readily against an ambitious opponent.
McComb said: “I’ve been pushing for a step up in opponent for some time now. I’ve been asking my trainer Danny Vaughan because the people I’ve faced so far have been a drop from elite amateurs.
“I get little out of beating people like that up and only getting a couple of rounds in so I welcome facing Szabo. In him, I have a proper test before Christmas and the new year and I’m looking forward to it.
“It’s a massive step up. He’s got a winning record and with 11 knockouts, he obviously carries power. He’s lost to massive names and he’s beaten some unbeaten prospects. He’s obviously a big jump up for me this early in my career but I’m excited by it.
“Stephen Ormond has fought at the highest level so Szabo stopping him with a body shot tells you he has power. I’ll have that in the back of my mind going into the fight and I believe it will make me perform better.”
Joining McComb vs. Szabo on an impressive card at the Titanic Exhibition Centre is Conrad Cummings vs. Ferenc Berki for the WBO European middleweight title, Gary Cully vs. Mohammed Kambuluta, Padraig McCrory, Paddy Gallagher, Phil Sutcliffe Jr and Steve Collins Jr.
