03 Feb Price fully focused on Povetkin challenge ahead of Cardiff showdown
MTK Global-backed Liverpool heavyweight David Price will clash with Alexander Povetkin on the undercard of Joshua-Parker unification battle
David Price insists he will be fully focused on upsetting Alexander Povetkin and that he will not be distracted by the tantalising opportunities a victory is likely to present.
MTK Global-managed Liverpool heavyweight Price (22-4, 18KOs) will challenge Russia’s Povetkin (33-1, 23KOs) for the WBA inter-continental and WBO international titles at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on March 31, live on Sky Sports Box Office.
Matchroom confirmed the match-up on Friday morning, with the bout set to feature on the undercard of the world unification clash between Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker.
While Povetkin is the mandatory challenger for Joshua’s WBA belt, Price is keen to steal that spot with a win over the Russian but the popular Scouser insists he is not looking too far ahead.
“When I have sat down and thought about what I could gain from this fight, the Joshua fight is one of them but it hasn’t crossed my mind too much,” said Price.
“I am just focussing on the task in hand and taking every training session as it comes and giving 100 percent.
“I am focussing on preparing myself mentally and physically for the fight so I am just looking forward to the fight itself and the fruits will come after the result.”
Price made a successful ring comeback at MTK Global’s Pride & Glory fight bill in Brentwood last December, recording a six-round points win over Kamil Sokolowski 10 months after his loss to Christian Hammer.
Povetkin defeated Hammer two months ago, but Price did not hesitate for long when offered a fight against the Russian.
“My initial reaction when I was offered the fight was to say I would have a think about it overnight, but as soon as I put the phone down I thought, ‘there is nothing for me to think about – it is too good an opportunity’,” said the 34-year-old.
“It is a massive, massive chance for me and it has come from nowhere. I wasn’t expecting an opportunity like this to appear so it was a no-brainer.
“It is a big ask for me to go out and win this fight but upsets do happen in sport,” continued MTK Global’s Price. “I have been on the wrong end of upsets in boxing and I think I am due a bit of luck.
“I have a belief that this fight has come at the right time for me and I have a belief that I am going to win the fight
“Without doing myself a disservice, every dog has its day and I have a feeling that this is doing to be my day and everything that has happened has led to this.”
